Visited the Roman Fort on Hadrian’s Wall at Housteads, Northumberland recently. What gets to you about this place is that other than the remains of the Fort and the Wall there is nothing there. The sky wasn’t very dramatic on this particular day but I took a few photographs anyway. I didn’t use any filters as I wanted to try and show the natural beauty of the area.
What a task this must have been for the Roman soldiers who were stationed here defending the wall. I can imagine how cold it was when that North wind picked up in the winter and they didn’t have the home comforts we have now to keep warm and entertained.
But it is a beautiful place, stark, but beautiful. Rolling hills, a few sheep, rabbits and quiet, really quiet. Sometimes being out in the countryside away from cars and people makes you feel good!
